What is Lypossage?
Lypossage is a non-invasive, hands-on body contouring technique designed to reduce the appearance of cellulite, tone sagging tissue, and improve overall body shape by reducing dimension. Developed by Charles W. Wiltsie III, a licensed massage therapist, Lypossage is rooted in lymphatic drainage, deep tissue massage, and myofascial release.
The treatment works by addressing stagnation in the lymphatic system, breaking down adhesions in the fascia (connective tissue), and improving circulation. Unlike surgical or machine-assisted body contouring methods, Lypossage relies entirely on manual manipulation by a trained practitioner.
Lypossage is performed in a series of 18 sessions, 3 times per week for 6 weeks. Each session lasts anywhere between 45 - 75 minutes, depending on which treatment areas selected. The practitioner uses specific hand techniques to stimulate the lymphatic system, break up fatty deposits, and improve the elasticity of the skin.
Lypossage also aids in the removal of toxins and waste products from the body. This detoxification process can improve energy levels and overall health.

The body is divided into three zones for treatment:
Zone 1 is the lower body, hips, thighs, buttocks, and lower abdomen. This zone is ideal for reducing cellulite and dimension by sculpting the lower body.
Zone 2 is the upper body back, chest, arms & upper abdomen This zone helps tone sagging tissues and improves posture.
Zone 3 is the head, neck & face, providing a natural lift, reducing puffiness, and rejuvenating the skin.

Lypossage is an excellent option for individuals looking to enhance their body shape without undergoing invasive procedures. It’s particularly beneficial for those with cellulite, sagging skin, or puffiness caused by fluid retention. It’s important to consult with a certified Lypossage practitioner to determine if the treatment is suitable for your needs and goals.

How Was Lypossage Developed?
Lypossage was developed in the late 1990s by Charles W. Wiltsie III, a licensed massage therapist who combined elements of lymphatic drainage, myofascial release, and deep tissue massage. His goal was to create a natural, non-invasive method to improve body contour, skin tone, and overall circulation.
Through clinical studies and hands-on practice, Wiltsie observed that targeted, structured massage movements could help break up stagnant tissue, reduce the appearance of cellulite, and promote detoxification. The method quickly gained popularity among therapists and clients seeking a holistic approach to body sculpting without surgery or harsh treatments.
Over time, Lypossage evolved into a certified treatment system with specialized training programs for licensed practitioners worldwide. Today, it continues to be recognized as a safe, effective, and therapeutic technique for enhancing both the body’s appearance and its natural health functions.

Contraindications:
Lypossage is a structured, non-invasive body contouring technique that combines elements of lymphatic drainage, myofascial release, and cellulite reduction massage. This specialized method helps detoxify tissues, improve circulation, and tone the skin by stimulating lymphatic flow and breaking down congested areas within connective tissue. While Lypossage offers visible and therapeutic benefits, there are important contraindications and precautions to consider:
-
Acute Inflammation or Infection: Lypossage should not be performed on areas with active infections, inflammation, or open wounds. Once healing has occurred and your healthcare provider has cleared you, sessions can safely resume.
-
Pregnancy: Lypossage is not recommended during pregnancy, as the deep tissue work and lymphatic stimulation may be too intense for the body during this time. Postpartum sessions may begin after medical clearance and once the body has recovered.
-
Active Cancer or Undiagnosed Lumps: Because Lypossage stimulates the lymphatic system, it should be avoided in individuals with active cancer unless cleared by an oncologist and performed by a therapist trained in oncology bodywork.
-
Varicose Veins and Thrombosis: Individuals with varicose veins, blood clots, or deep vein thrombosis should avoid Lypossage in affected areas, as increased circulation could aggravate these conditions.
-
Severe Cardiovascular or Kidney Conditions: Since Lypossage promotes fluid movement and detoxification, it can place added demand on the circulatory and renal systems. Clients with these conditions should receive medical clearance prior to treatment.
Being mindful of these contraindications is essential to ensure a safe and beneficial experience. Always consult your healthcare provider and work with a certified Lypossage practitioner who can tailor sessions to your body’s unique needs and goals.
